TUXEDO MOON returned from a
11-month layoff to stretch his winning sequence to seven while MEXICAN
ROSE's unbeaten record came to an end in the Class 1 - 1200m sprint at
Kranji tonight.
TUXEDO MOON (Stravinsky -
Jennifer Rush by Prince Echo) was being prepared for a crack at the Lion
City Cup last April when he pulled up sore in training and x-ray showed he
had a chip from the
near-side sesamoid. Further surgery was required in September.
MEXICAN ROSE, winner of two
of her three starts in New Zealand, was unbeaten in five outings prior to
tonight and was also racing after a short let-up since end October.
MEXICAN ROSE (Volksraad -
Down View by Gone West) took the lead on settling down, while TUXEDO MOON
quickly joined her at the 800m. MEXICAN ROSE held a slight advantage till
the last 100m when TUXEDO MOON surged ahead and just held off the
fast-finishing NTINI to win by a head. MEXICAN ROSE was a neck away third.
"I’m
very relieved, but I’ll be more relieved in the morning when we see how he
pulls-up from this run," said trainer Don Baertschiger.
It was the seventh win in
11 outings for TUXEDO MOON who landed in Singapore unraced.
