The Perak Turf Club is the custodian of a Perak racing tradition dating back to 1886 when the first meeting was held at Taiping, then the state capital.

Ten years later, according to available records, the Kinta Gymkhana Club held its first meeting at Batu Gajah with the running of the Perak Derby.

Ipoh was a fast-growing at the turn of the century and the Ipoh Gymkhana Club was started in February, 1913. In due time meetings at Batu Gajah faded out and Ipoh became the main centre of racing, although the Perak Gymkhana Club and Taiping Turf Club were to carry on racing at Taiping for many years until the Japanese invasion.

Racing in Ipoh gained immense popularity and in 1926 the Perak Turf Club (PRTC) came into existence. Although the PRTC carried on racing throughout the Japanese Occupation, it has the same rehabilitation problems as other clubs after the war. But facilities were back to pre-war standards by 1951.

The late Dato Yeoh Cheang Lee became the first non-european chairman of the club in 1960 and it was largely due to his vision and leadership, and subsequently his successor (in 1982) Tan Sri V. Jeyaratnam, the present chairman, that the PRTC flourished and achieved many 'firsts' in the annals of local racing.

Today, the PRTC races on a fine racecourse, the backdrop of which is the Gunong Korbu, one of the highest peaks in the main range of Peninsula Malaysia.

The main classic race in Ipoh is the Coronation Cup run over 1,600 metres.

The other two main attactions are the Perak Derby, at 2,400 metres the longest race in the Malaysia-Singapore circuit, and the Sultan Gold Vase, the only event run over 1,100 metres on the straight course.
