APRIL (DERBY) MEETING
Third Day,  Saturday,  12 April 2008

 RACE 1:  RESTRICTED MAIDEN - 1100M STR

ITALKRANE, a course scratching as it was suffering from fever, will be required to undergo a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

EASTERN TALE jumped awkwardly outwards and was slow to begin.

MI ANGELITOS raced keen and was difficult to settle in the early and middle stages.

GOOD GIRLFRIEND hung in from the 200m to the finish.

JAI SPECIAL had a tendency to lay in throughout the race.

 RACE 2:  CLASS 5 - 1100M STR

Trainer A Rahim was fined RM100 under MRA Rule 65(5)(b) for failing to produce the declared colours for DREAM KING.

FONDA was slow into stride.

At about the 300m, KNIGHT GREG steadied momentarily when tightened between DREAM KING and TOMAHAWK MISSILE.

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that CONSPIRE bled and will be barred from racing for a period of three months under MRA Rule 92(3)(a)&(b).

Jockey E Aslam, the rider of CONSPIRE, was shown the film of his ride in the concluding stages and warned that he would be expected to ride all his mounts out fully to the finish, failing which action may be taken against him.

Jockey I Saifudin, the rider of ROYAL GAMBADE, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that ROYAL GAMBADE returned cut into off-hind fetlock.

Jockey V Sivan, the rider of WORLD RECORD, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of WORLD RECORD revealed no obvious abnormality.

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that FONDA returned having cast its off-hind plate.

 RACE 3:  CLASS 5 (MALAYSIAN BRED FILLIES & MARES) - 1200M

HERO VIN, which was down 15kgs in body weight, and BUBBLY GIRL, which was down 28kgs in body weight since their last runs, were checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon prior to the race and were passed fit to start.

Trainer Evert van Breukelen was fined RM250 for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for presenting ORANJESTAR with an incorrectly fitted gear.

Acting on veterinary advice that LADY MEDUSA was lame off-hind, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the filly at 1:35pm. LADY MEDUSA will be required to pass a test (1000m/vet) before being entered to race again.

KUALA DIPANG GOLD was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon just prior to the start and was passed fit to race.

SHE’S MY MAGIC jumped awkwardly outwards, brushing the outside gate.

Shortly after the start, HERO VIN was inconvenienced when crowded between MISS POSH and ORANJESTAR which rolled inwards.

At about the 1000m, CARMINE HAN which was laying in, steadied off the heels of MISS POSH. MONA LISA, which was following, clipped the heels of ORANJESTAR and blundered.

Approaching the 900m, SHE’S MY MAGIC (App I Fadzlei), which was racing green, clipped the heels of CARMINE HAN and stumbled, unbalancing its rider.

At about the 250m, CARMINE HAN which was racing green, dived in abruptly when being struck with the whip.

Jockey N Azman, the rider of BUBBLY GIRL, was shown the film of his ride in the concluding stages and signed an Admission of Guilt Form for RM1,000 under MRA Rule 44(6) for failing to ride his horse out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

The saddle on WONDERFUL GIFT slipped backwards during running.

A post-race veterinary examination of ORANJESTAR revealed no obvious abnormality.

 RACE 4:  CLASS 5 (MALAYSIAN BREDS) - 1200M

The Stewards permitted Jockey Y Aify to replace Jockey E Aslam on ELEGANT FUSION as the latter was stood down by the Club Medical Officer.

POLAR GIRL (App HS Gill) stumbled on jumping and thereafter threw its head up on a number of occasions, unbalancing its rider.

HE’S A CHARMER jumped awkwardly outwards.

At about the 1000m, STRAIGHT MONEY ducked in abruptly in an attempt to take the near bend.

At about the 400m, FUTURE PRINCESS switched inwards to obtain clear running and in so doing, carried CHRISTIE in onto HE’S A CHARMER.

A post-race veterinary examination of CHRISTIE revealed no obvious abnormality.

 RACE 5:  CLASS 4 - 1100M STR

EASTERN FIGHTER, a course scratching as it was suffering from loss of condition, will be required to pass a test (1000m/vet) before being entered to race again.

Whilst parading, MOUNTAIN EAGLE shifted its near fore plate and had to be reshod prior to going to the start.

SPARKLING RAINBOW, which broke through its gate, was quickly reined in, checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon and was passed fit to race.

Shortly after the start, WYATT rolled in and made contact with KING’S ANGEL.

PERFECT GOLD laid in from the 400m, placing its rider in a disadvantage.

Post-race veterinary examinations of MOUNTAIN EAGLE and KING’S ANGEL revealed no obvious abnormality. KING’S ANGEL was impounded.

App Jacky Lim who rode his 41st winner on WYATT in this race, would only be entitled to claim 2kgs allowance as from Monday, 14 April 2008. App Jacky Lim was fined RM200 for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for failing to produce his apprentice winning rides book when requested by the Stipendiary Stewards.

 RACE 6:  CLASS 4 - 1400M

Whilst parading, JERAM ELEGANT shifted its near-fore plate and had to be reshod prior to going to the start.

Whilst being loaded into the barrier, JERAM ELEGANT kicked the back gates and was injured. Acting on veterinary advice that JERAM ELEGANT had sustained a cut to its off-hind leg, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the mare at 3:17pm. The mare will be required to undergo a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

ERKE was slow into stride.

At about the 450m, BIG TURNOUT shifted out over the heels of JERAM FASHION to obtain clear running.

At about the 200m, ERKE ran up to and checked off the heels of SAY YES which rolled out slightly.

App M Yusri, the rider of SALTIMBANCO, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of SALTIMBANCO revealed no obvious abnormality.

Jockey TM Wan, the rider of FIRE GENERAL, reported that his horse was making respiratory noises. A post-race veterinary examination of FIRE GENERAL which trailed the field throughout, revealed no obvious abnormality.

 RACE 7:  CLASS 4 - 1400M

FIERY GAMBADE, which was up 25kgs in body weight since its last run, was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon prior to the race and was passed fit to start.

Light rain fell prior to and during the running of this race.

HAPPY VICTORY and COURAGEOUS GENERAL came together at the start.

FIERY GAMBADE was slow into stride.

Shortly after the start, BRING IN FORTUNES rolled out, carrying SPEED LOONG out onto HAN VENTURE. LANGSTON, which was following, clipped the heels of HAN VENTURE and stumbled.

At about the 1100m, BEST WRESTLER steadied on the inside of COURAGEOUS GENERAL which rolled in slightly.

At about the 1000m, BEST WRESTLER rolled inwards in anticipating the near bend, carrying SHOW OFF inwards.

At about the 800m, HAN VENTURE steadied on the inside of SPEED LOONG (A Cavallo) which rolled in. Jockey A Cavallo was shown the film of the incident and warned to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

Jockey M Djulkifli, the rider of COURAGEOUS GENERAL, was shown the film of his ride in the concluding stages and signed an Admission of Guilt Form for RM1,000 under MRA Rule 44(6) for failing to ride his horse out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

 RACE 8:  CLASS 5 - 1400M

As FIRST CROWN could not proceed to the start, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding at 4:15pm. FIRST CROWN will be required to pass a test (starting stall, to be ridden unaided to the start) before being entered to race again.

JERAM MAS was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon just prior to the start and was passed fit to race.

DUTY FREE SPIRIT, which was over-racing in the early stages, had to steady off the heels of VALIANT HERO at about the 1200m.

Approaching the 100m, RHYTHM EXPRESS steadied momentarily when CLASSIC GOLD rolled out under pressure.

Jockey M Leong, the rider of RHYTHM EXPRESS, was shown the film of his ride in the concluding stages and signed an Admission of Guilt Form for RM1,000 under MRA Rule 44(6) for failing to ride his horse out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

App LL Tai, the rider of JERAM MAS, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of JERAM MAS revealed that it was lame near-fore and as such will be required to pass a test (1000m/vet) before being entered to race again.

Post-race veterinary examinations of VALIANT HERO and DUTY FREE SPIRIT revealed no obvious abnormality. VALIANT HERO was impounded.

When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of ACE FOX, Trainer F Maynard stated that ACE FOX had been running disappointing races over shorter distances. He added that the gelding trialed impressively with the blinkers last week and attributed the improved performance to this as ACE FOX was able to race on the pace today. His explanation was noted and his attention was drawn to the rules regarding “in-and-out running”.

 RACE 9:  CLASS 5 - 1400M

NATURAL GOOD, which was restless in the barrier, jumped awkwardly and was slow to begin.

MARVELLOUS PRESENT and DOUGLAS were both slow to begin.

Shortly after the start, ROCCO SPEED was inconvenienced when tightened between HAPPY MASTER and SPECIAL WARRIOR.

Rounding the first bend at about the 1200m, DIAMOND MELANG rolled out and carried HULK GENERAL and HAPPY MASTER wide.

A post-race veterinary examination of NATURAL GOOD revealed that it was lame off-fore and as such will be required to pass a test (1000m/vet) before being entered to race again.

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that RUN BABY RUN and ROCCO SPEED both returned having cast their near-fore plates.

When questioned regarding the riding tactics of DIAMOND MELANG, Trainer KH Ng stated that he had not expected DIAMOND MELANG to lead today and was surprised that the gelding raced in the lead as DIAMOND MELANG had never shown an early pace in all its previous runs. His explanation was noted.

 RACE 10:  CLASS 5 - 1800M

TANG OF GOLD, which was down 16kgs in body weight, and STAY THE CAUSE, which was down 15kgs in body weight since their last runs, were checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon prior to the race and were passed fit to start.

RAWHIDE, which broke through the gates, was quickly reined in, checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon and was passed fit to race.

DIAMOND SUPER, which stood at the start and was considerably slow to begin, will be required to pass a test (starting stall) before being entered to race again.

GLOBALLY FAMOUS jumped awkwardly outwards, making contact with TINKER BELL.

RAWHIDE jumped awkwardly with its head up and was slow to begin.

ALL ALONE was obliged to race wide on the first bend at about the 1600m.

FORTYEIGHT KING laid in under the whip in the concluding stages.

Jockey H Barnabas, the rider of RAWHIDE, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of RAWHIDE revealed no obvious abnormality.

Jockey D Chong, the rider of TANG OF GOLD, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of TANG OF GOLD, which raced poorly, revealed that it was lame near-fore and as such will be required to pass a test (1000m/vet) before being entered to race again.

A post-race veterinary examination of GOOD PROSPECT revealed that it was lame off-fore and as such will be required to pass a test (1000m/vet) before being entered to race again.

 RACE 11:  CLASS 4 - 1800M

NINETYFIVE EAGLE, which was a little slow to begin, was further inconvenienced when tightened by DRAGON OF JERAM which jumped awkwardly outwards.

FIRST DEFENCE was a little slow to begin.

HOT OR NOT was obliged to race wide on the first bend at about the 1600m.

As the pace steadied at about the 1400m, FIRST DEFENCE steadied off the heels of ASIAN TENACITY.

Jockey I Azhar, the rider of FIRST DEFENCE, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of FIRST DEFENCE revealed that it was lame near-fore and as such will be required to pass a test (1000m/vet) before being entered to race again.

 GENERAL

STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ INQUIRY RESULTING FROM THE EVIDENCE SUBMITTED BY TRAINER TIANG KIM CHOI (KC TIANG) AT AN INQUIRY ON MONDAY, 24 MARCH 2008 AT THE PENANG TURF CLUB WHICH WAS PERTAINING TO THE RUNNING AND HANDLING OF RACEHORSE “WONDERFUL WIZARD” WHICH WAS TRAINED BY HIM AND RIDDEN BY APPRENTICE JOCKEY MOHD EIRWAN BIN KHALID (APP K EIRWAN) IN RACE 3 (R326), 1ST DAY, SATURDAY, 22 MARCH 2008, PENANG TURF CLUB MARCH MEETING 2008

At the conclusion of an inquiry on 7 April 2008, Trainer Tiang Kim Choi (KC Tiang), the Trainer of WONDERFUL WIZARD, was found guilty of a charge of misconduct under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) in that he gave false evidence during the Inquiry on Monday, 24 March 2008 at the Penang Turf Club, pertaining to the running and handling of WONDERFUL WIZARD in that he had stated that he had placed a bet of RM300 each way at the tote counter in the Trainer’s Room at the Penang Turf Club on 22 March 2008. This information that he submitted was false.

Trainer KC Tiang was fined RM25,000 and was advised of his right of appeal (12:10pm).

RACE 6 (R384), 1ST DAY, SATURDAY, 5 APRIL 2008

At the conclusion of an inquiry on 7 April 2008, after taking evidence and reviewing the films, App S Thai Yang, in the presence of his master, Trainer KF Coetzee, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that whist riding CHECKPOINT CHARLIE in Race 6 (R384), 1st day, Saturday, 5 April 2008 at the Perak Turf Club, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that CHECKPOINT CHARLIE was given full opportunity of obtaining the best possible placing.

The particulars of the charge were that:

1. After jumping awkwardly, he sat quietly on his mount, letting the runners on his outside to take up his rightful running;
2. After entering the home straight at about the 400m till approximately the 150m, he made no attempt to go forward when it was reasonable to do so and in fact, sat against his mount; and
3. He feigned the use of the whip at about the 150m mark and thereafter, he shifted in at about the 75m for no satisfactory reason and thereafter failed to ride his mount with sufficient vigour and determination to the finish.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account the facts of this case, App S Thai Yang’s previous clean record and his points in mitigation. After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), App S Thai Yang was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from 7 April 2008 and to expire on 6 April 2009, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal (2:42pm).

APPEAL BY JOCKEY RICHARD LIM LEE CHET (R LIM) AGAINST HIS EIGHTEEN MONTHS DISQUALIFICATION AND FINE OF RM30,000 FOR CONTRAVENTION OF MRA RULE 44(8) IMPOSED BY THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS IN CONNECTION WITH HIS RUNNING AND HANDLING OF RACEHORSE “JERAM NATURAL” IN RACE 9 (R036), 2ND DAY, SUNDAY, 6 JANUARY 2008, PERAK TURF CLUB JANUARY MEETING 2008

The Perak Turf Club Racing Stewards heard the above appeal on 10 April 2008.

After considering submissions from Jockey R Lim, his Counsel, his witnesses and the Chief Stipendiary Steward, the Racing Stewards dismissed the appeal and the eighteen months disqualification was confirmed to commence with immediate effect from 10 April 2008 and to expire on 9 October 2009, both days inclusive. However, the fine of RM30,000 was set aside. Jockey R Lim’s deposit was refunded.

APPEAL BY JOCKEY CHENG KE TEN (KT CHENG) AGAINST HIS ONE YEAR DISQUALIFICATION FOR CONTRAVENTION OF MRA RULE 44(8) IMPOSED BY THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS IN CONNECTION WITH HIS RUNNING AND HANDLING OF RACEHORSE “ISLAND STAR” IN RACE 3 (R101), 1ST DAY, SATURDAY, 26 JANUARY 2008, PENANG TURF CLUB JANUARY MEETING 2008

The Penang Turf Club Racing Stewards heard the above appeal on 11 April 2008.

After considering submissions from Jockey KT Cheng, his Counsel and the Chief Stipendiary Steward, the Racing Stewards dismissed the appeal and the one year disqualification was confirmed to commence with effect from 28 January 2008 and to expire on 27 January 2009, both days inclusive (since Jockey KT Cheng was not granted a stay of sentence). Jockey KT Cheng’s deposit was forfeited.

HEARING FOR A STAY OF SENTENCE BY APP THAI YANG SINGH a/l MANGGAL SINGH (APP S THAI YANG) IN RELATION TO THE ONE YEAR DISQUALIFICATION FOR A CONTRAVENTION OF MRA RULE 44(8) IMPOSED BY THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS IN CONNECTION WITH HIS RUNNING AND HANDLING OF RACEHORSE “CHECKPOINT CHARLIE” IN RACE 6 (R384), 1ST DAY, SATURDAY, 5 APRIL 2008, PERAK TURF CLUB APRIL MEETING 2008

App S Thai Yang subsequently exercised his right of appeal on 8 April 2008 and applied for a stay of sentence, which after a hearing on 12 April 2008 (in the presence of his Master, Trainer KF Coetzee), was not granted. He was advised of his right of appeal against the Stipendiary Stewards’ decision not to grant him a stay of sentence (11:53am).
