Sakura Japan wins 3YO Championship heat

PENANG: May 6, 2018

Australian filly SAKURA JAPAN put up a gutsy display to win the first heat of the 2018 Malaysian 3YO Champion here today.

JUTSU, as many feared, failed to saddle up after his hard-earned victory last week even though he was well in touch with the leaders throughout today.

Five-time winner RELAU STAR was sent off the favourite and looked the winner when he dashed clear at the 200m.

SAKURA JAPAN, kept handy throughout by Ruzaini Supien, was about to launch her effort at the 300m when D'GREAT DRAGON ran about and Ruzaini had to straight his mount.

Once the filly got clear behind the heels of D'GREAT DRAGON and got into strides, SAKURA JAPAN charged home to pip RELAU STAR by head on the line. She paid RM114.

SAKURA JAPAN finished second in her debut last month and is trained by Charles Leck who just missed out on winning the 3YO Championship last year.
