Vagabond settles for first MRA win

KUALA LUMPUR: Mar 5, 2016

The long search for his first win on the MRA circuit ended at Sungei Besi here today for VAGABOND, a two-time winner in his native Australia.

Partnered by apprentice Zulfikri Salim who had ridden him several times in the past, the seven-year-old was a long way back inn the early running. It was only in the final 300m that he started to gain ground on the leader and favourite BLACK IS POWER.

VAGABOND swept to the lead 50m out to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

VAGABOND, purchased for NZ$100,000 as a yearling, finished fourth in his debut in New Zealand and was quickly dispatched to Australia where he won his next start at Doomben.

The gelding was on board in four of six starts at three without winning and was consistent again at four, finishing on board in all his four outings, winning a Class 2 race at Sunshine Coast.

Brought over to Singapore, he fared badly in three starts before crossing the causeway to join PS Kumaran. Today's outing was his 18th in Malaysia.
