California Cat back in winner's circle

CALIFORNIA CAT returned to the winner's circle after 10 months to snatch a thrilling win in the Enrich Stakes A sprint over the 1100m straight course here today.

It was on the track in July last year that the son of Antonius Pius earned his biggest win in the Perak Gold Vase over the same course and distance.

Since then, CALIFORNIA CAT has have several minor placings, notably a third to IMPEL in the Tunku Gold Cup last February.

Apprentice Mohd Aizat Abdul Malik, who rode him in his last two starts, made it third time lucky on the Australian gelding. The pair headed a tight bunch as the the field settled down.

They were headed by PETRENUI momentarily at the 200m but CALIFORNIA CAT found an extra gear towards the finish to win by a neck. It was the gelding's seventh win in 23 starts.

B'NEVAGIVUP, meanwhile, also scored a hard-earned victory in the final event, making it three wins from six starts, and gave Aizat a double for the day.

But the afternoon belonged to another apprentice, Saddam Hussein bin Saari, who recorded his first ever treble with wins on ADMIRAL DELIGHT, BRAVE SISTER and AUDACIOUS.
