Tommy Noordin retires after 41 years

PENANG:  Oct 17, 2014

After 41 years, veteran trainer Kamaruddin Marican Noordin, better known as Tommy in the racing circle, has relinquished his licence effective today.

Tommy, 70, first obtained his A licence in 1973 after understudying his late father O M Noordin, and completing a training and breeding stint in Australia and New Zealand in 1971 and 1972.

"I have been lucky in some years. When I started I had two very good owners in the late (first prime minister of Malaysia) Tunku Abdul Rahman and the late Lim Chooi Seng, both of whom had a string of good horses with me.

"I also trained for the late Sultan of Perak (Sultan Idris Shah) but my biggest owner in the early days was S K Quek of Asiatic Stable who had a team of 30 horses," recalled Tommy in an interview some years ago.
